“I am no fool. I knew that if I wanted to make it to the end of the week alive, I would have to avoid upsetting Grandpa as much as possible. No singing, no playful nips, no jaunty bell.”

Bird and Grandpa stay home in Massachusetts while Mother, Father, Joseph and Maya head south for a winter holiday. When Grandpa determines to set tropical Bird free in freezing February, Bird must use every bit of bird brain power to outsmart him.

• Will Bird become a parrot popsicle?
• What’s in the creepy second bedroom where no one ever goes?
• Do Grandpa and Bird play Dig a Hole to China and Send Birdie on a Trip?

In the spirit of Tom and Jerry, Bugs Bunny and Elmer Fudd, and Road Runner and Wile E. Coyote, here come Bird and Grandpa in the hilarious first short story in the Grandpa Hates the Bird series!

GRANDPA HATES THE BIRD The Battle Begins - edition by Eve Yohalem. Children eBooks @ . Reviews

I read this during a short break and was left speechless (pretty much). It was a strange and odd story.
I really enjoyed this well-written book. Written from the perspective
of the bird, he explains how he got left with Grandpa for a week
while the family went out of town.

It would be great with more pictures, and I would have preferred
the ending to not be quite so abrupt. Maybe a few more lines
about how the bird responded when the family came home with reference
to his stand-off with Grandpa. Maybe a little foreshadowing of
what's to come in the next adventure or something.
We ready this at bedtime, and he'd talk about it all day waiting to find out what happened. We have a cockatiel that likes to tease our Grandpa too
I was looking for stories I could read to a five year old. I downloaded this one because it got fairly good reviews. I pre-read it and it is funny, especially at the end.

I won't read it to my five year old grand-daughter. Grandpa is a little too mean to the bird. The story would be ok for older children, maybe 10 or older. Unless they are very sensitive they probably could see the humor without being disturbed by Grandpa's treatment of the bird.

I gave it 4 stars because I laughed out loud, although it isn't a good story for my purposes.
Got the book for my new tablet from the store as a free sample. It had us rolling with laughter! If you like Dear Ms. Larue you will like this book written from the viewpoint of the bird. My only caution is that it is for older children due to the intense anger of the grandpa and his desire to kill the bird. My older boys ages 15 and 16 loved it and I had to caution my 7 y.o. not to repeat terms like "kill" in that context since schools and parents are very sensitive to that in light of recent tragedies, thus, a rating of 4 - not 5.
When I first opened the book I was disappointed, as it wasn't a picture story like I'd expected, and I almost removed it from my kindle without reading it. (I happened to get lucky and snagged it free.) That would've been a shame as my young(4 and 5) girls and I were INSTANTLY HOOKED in by the captivating story and we laughed out loud and truly enjoyed every page-WITHOUT pictures! It's actually healthy and helpful for pre or beginning readers to listen and visualize their own mental imagery at times such as bedtime when the lights are already out and they wouldn't be able to see anything anyway. This is a great story if you are beginning reading "chapter" books to a young child, or if you have an avid reader in middle school who enjoys humor or if you are an over-the-hill bird lover/hater - ANYONE will have fun with this one. The bird as narrator makes for a cleverly delivered story that can easily be read in one sitting, and will leave you ready for more adventures with Bird. Written by an obvious talent, and refreshingly NOT full of spelling and grammar mistakes!!!! TWO THUMBS WAY UP for "Grandpa Hates the Bird"!!
This book was positively endearing. One of the best new children's books I've seen in quite a while. I was waiting in a doctor's office with my mother and wanted a moderately short tale to pass the time. I read it out loud and we both got quite a few laughs. This is one in which I would probably invest in a hard copy (and not just to throw at the bird). Either way, the free price tag is doing this book a huge disservice. It is easily worth the 10-15 price point that is found on most children's books these days. Great grammar and spelling throughout which is a rare find on . If I could give more than five stars, I would have done so.
Bird's family is a little girl, Maya, and her brother, Joseph, and Mother. Once a year the family goes on a trip for a week, leaving Bird with Grandma and Grandpa. Bird is liked, if not loved by all except Grandpa, and this year, Grandma has a trip to take at the same time as Bird's family, so he will be alone with Grandpa. What will happen to Bird?

Very well written, very realistic with accurate bird facts, and EXTREMELY funny! I have not laughed out loud while reading in years, and I repeatedly interrupted my husband's activities to read him the funny parts. I can't wait for the kids to get home so we can read it together.

Spoiler
I just about lost my marbles with laughter over the playing dead funeral scene, and Father saying, "stop being morbid." Too hilarious!!!
