OK read, I guess. Doesn't remind me a whole lot of the series... I'll probably try to resell it, I guess.

Dallas Lee Raintree 9780440117520 Books Reviews

Lee Raintree wrote this first novelization of the "Dallas" TV series (others would follow by Burt Hirschfeld and by Soaps & Serials) covering the five-episode miniseries that is regarded as the first season of the show. It was released in 1978 by Lorimar Productions and Dell Publishing just as the show was lifting off.

This novel will give you a whole new appreciation for Jock Ewing, as Raintree takes the style and tone of an old western in the telling of the early days of the Ewings and Barnes (you'll find yourself wishing Raintree had made a whole novel out of just that first third of the book). The characters are bold and substantial, the language colorful and sometimes graphic (this book is not for younger readers) and the locale descriptions just enough to light your imagination on fire. Raintree is a skilled writer, and the Soaps & Serials series pales in comparison to this Dell novel.

The only issue might be some lapses in continuity, as the show's writers took the series in different directions than this 1978 telling set out. Here, Ray Krebs could not be Jock's son, as Jock's only infidelity to Ellie was with a Ewing Oil employee who later blackmailed him. And here he did not enter World War II, nulling the whole Pride, Texas, storyline of one of the show's final seasons. Also, here the alcoholic Gary was married twice -- quickly -- with Lucy as the child of his second wife, Maureen (and Maureen sleeps with J.R. for years and tells him that Lucy is his, which Lucy assumes to be true throughout this book), Bobby is a driven Vietnam War vet who could blow at any moment and J.R. and Sue Ellen are only married four years when Bobby brings Pamela home.

Raintree tells the backstory of the Ewing-Barnes feud, then brings the action up to the point where the series begins, recounting the episodes "Digger's Daughter," "Lessons" and "Spy in the House," with the illicit dealings of Ewing Oil secretary Julie (Parsons here, not Grey), who offers Ewing Red File secrets to Cliff Barnes regarding Sen. Wild Bill Orloff. Then J.R. and Ray dally with two bored, out-of-town housewives, and their men come to Southfork for revenge, replaying the events of the episode "Winds of Vengeance." Finally, the Ewing barbecue sets the scene for Pam's miscarriage, the very end of this novel.
I remember buying this book for $2-$3 from a newsstand when I was 12 years old in 1981. I was obsessed with "Dallas", wanted the book, and I GOT IT with my own money. Of course the book was written for adults, which my parents realized after leafing through a few pages of my new purchase. They immediately made me take it back to the store.
I remember scheming like JR to get this book by making all As in my last quarter of 6th grade (1 "B"). "If I make all A's, my parents cannot refuse me", I connived. All of this for a book that was $2.50!!!!
My parents allowed me to buy it and I started from the beginning. I must say that I found the early years extremely boring (Jock/Digger/Miss Ellie), but I did find Gary's early marriage (to "Maureen", who on the show was "Valene") interesting because it was heavily implied that Lucy was JR's child.
The most shocking part of the book to me was what "really" happened during the "Winds of Vengeance" section. Sue Ellen is horribly assaulted by the two men (on the show, she was made to sing) to the point that her personality changes in a surprising way. Also, the two men that come to Southfork from Waco are dealt with in a much more dramatic and permanent fashion than in the episode.
A wonderful read that I still remember, 37 years later!!!!
a great item for anyone to own !!!
The book was exactly what I was looking for and was exactly as pictured. It was in great condition and was delivered in a timely manner. No complaints, only smiles.
all ok - satisfied.
OK read, I guess. Doesn't remind me a whole lot of the series... I'll probably try to resell it, I guess.
