The Courtship of Princess Leia Star Wars Dave Wolverton Books

Mr. Wolverton's book continues the pursuit of Warlord Zinsj but ties the tale in with Han's courtship of Leia and Leia's apparent admiration for another suitor. At the beginning of the book, General Solo returns from a five-month campaign against Zinsj and believes that he has won a major victory. Arriving at Coruscant he is startled to find dozens of saucer-shaped Battle Dragons from the Hapan fleet. The Hapan Consortium is an extremely powerful, wealthy, and mysterious political entity that would be a valuable ally to the New Republic. Leia had paid a diplomatic visit to the Hapans several months earlier to explore the possibility of joining forces. Now the Hapans have come to Coruscant to give the terms they would insist upon in a joint effort. The only problem that arises is that Leia is expected to marry Isolder, the Queen Mother's son and heir.

From this point the book moves on to Han's kidnapping of Leia, their journey to the planet of Dathomir, their difficulties with the legendary Witches of Dathomir, and the discovery that Warlord Zsinj's ship Iron Fist is actually undergoing repairs in an orbital stardock above the planet. Fortunately, Luke Skywalker also shows up on Dathomir to help our heroes. The book ends well and has some great battle scenes.

However, Mr. Wolverton's problem lies in his depiction of Leia as a lovesick damsel who has suddenly decided to spurn the advances of her previous true love, Han Solo. Almost uniformly throughout the Star Wars saga Leia is an extremely strong and capable woman. Now all of a sudden she has reversed her feelings completely and has fallen for the Hapan prince. The whole sequence just falls flat. I didn't believe it for a minute.

On the other hand, the book has some great characters and scenes, especially the Nightsisters, i.e., the witches. They are memorable and would be a welcome addition to future books. Also, we learn a lot more about one of my favorites, the rancor. On the planet of Dathomir the rancors have flourished and developed a place of their own. There is a lot more to the rancors than simply serving as a killing machine for Jabba the Hutt.

Read the book and enjoy it. Just skip through the romance novel scenes of Leia trying to decide who she really loves.

The Courtship of Princess Leia Star Wars Dave Wolverton Books Reviews

I finished it after a good friend inspired me to start reading the Star Wars novels.
It took 22 years and a summer Internship out in the wilderness for me to wake up and realize what I was missing out on in Star Wars' fantastic Expanded Universe. As all Fiction (and even some Non-Fiction) books should do, which transport you and have you imagine that you're actually living the story, I was captivated by the great story telling, the familiar and also new and mysterious characters who I wanted to know more about.

The Courtship of Princess Leia was a Novel that actually got away from me when I was child. I had the book as a youngster, tried to read it, but never finished it and the book is somewhere misplaced in storage. I was too young and I wasn't ready. But after my rebirth in the American Wilderness I bought the book along with other Star Wars novels and enjoyed it immensely.

I personally recommend this to all the Star Wars fans out there.
I just recently got introduced to Star Wars EU. As a big Fan of Leia and Han, I decided to read this book which involves them. This story was well written by Dave Wolverton, that as a reader you become part of the worlds and can see the creatures and humans that are described in the story. The tittle makes the book sound like a romance story, but like anything related to Star Wars it’s an adventurous story, which includes action, suspense, and mystery. Also, I really enjoyed the comedy in the book, which in this case C-3PO gets the best laughs by becoming Han's "wingman" when trying to win Leia back.

The only thing I did not like about the story (and mainly because it didn't make sense to me) is that Leia becomes attracted to another man, which makes her think that she no longer loves Han. Having seen all 3 movies from the original trilogy and read The Truce at Bakura, it gave me the impression that they when through a lot for them to officially initiate a relationship. So, it made no sense when Leia wants to end their relationship after one minute of having met a “handsome prince." But, I guess this had to be the main dilemma of story in order for it to exist.
The Courtship of Princess Leia's place in Star Wars lore is assured because it's the novel that introduced the Hapans and the witches of Dathomir into the Star Wars Expanded Universe. That being said, it's really not worth the read. The central plot involves Princess Leia having to choose between Han Solo and the wealthy, charming Prince Isolder; the terrible romantic comedy cliches don't stop there, complete with C-3PO reduced to playing Han's wacky sidekick (there is one admittedly funny scene in which he sings a song extolling Han's virtues) and Han Solo, the romantic lead, deciding to undertake a bizarre stunt that would normally get someone arrested but somehow wins the heart of Princess Leia. And therein lies the problem with The Courtship of Princess Leia the reader is never in any doubt about the outcome of the love triangle. Author Wolverton attempts to solve this problem by introducing yet another love triangle, with Luke Skywalker finding himself the object of affection for a witch of Dathomir, whom Prince Isolder also falls for. The outcome of this love triangle is also never in doubt. The plot feels as if it takes forever to get going (especially early on, when it borrows a plot twist from Spaceballs!). The action picks up somewhat when the characters reach Dathomir, but in the latter half of the novel, the central villains fail to register as significant threats. The novel is well-known because of elements introduced within it, but it's not exactly a fun trip to a galaxy far, far away.
