The Starfighter Invitation The Singularity Game Book 1 eBook Andrea K Höst
The story begins with the opening of a new game, Dream Speed, that appears to be too good to be true. It is a MMO with an amazing interface and the capacity to add millions of participants. The Main Character enjoys games and jumps in. Almost all the action takes place in the game, but the MC does have a life outside the game. The gamers learn to use lan, some kind of life force, to do things in the virtual reality world. There are quests and ranking challenges and competitions. The MC interacts with old friends and new groups in the game, and we learn about them and about her. Characters develop, and there are relationships. Questions arise: In an immersive game, how should one behave? What moral principles should apply to life-like settings? What is the goal of the game? The story grew on me, and now I find myself contemplating the characters and the mysteries. I will definitely buy the next book. I am not a gamer, but I found the story enjoyable and intriguing.Tags : The Starfighter Invitation (The Singularity Game Book 1) - Kindle edition by Andrea K Höst. The Starfighter Invitation The Singularity Game Book 1 eBook Andrea K Höst Reviews
Such a beautiful story from a favorite author. I have everything she has written and recommend this and all her other books highly. Andrea K Höst writes books you are happy to read over and over again. While not a gamer I had no difficulties grasping concepts and storyline and eagerly await additional installments. Plot summaries and book reports abound so I won't bore with information found elsewhere. If you're on the fence I can say your entertainment time and money will always be well spent on this author.
A virtual MMO using impossible technology, and everyone questions the source. The gamemaster NPC's lie and give half truths, and the questions continue.
To the MC, the simulation is a dream come true. To the world, perhaps a last, best chance.
I appreciated the thoughtfulness in the construction of this book, the universe she built, and the people within it. I also appreciate sufficient research into both technology and psychology.
This book's focus was on psychology and sociology within an advanced technological simulation. The MC's thoughts, dislikes, and background were on full display.
Game mechanics were two-fold - advancing in LAN (personal energy) abilities for level while participating in side quests for perks. Simple yet effective, given the game's ultimate purpose.
I rate this a high 4 as I only give 5's to those books that cause me to immediately reread them. No need for rereading this book - its intent was clear, and the ultimate question will only be answered if the author publishes another book or two and makes this a series.
I loved this book! I fell into it and lived in it while I read. Host is great at world building, and this book has a world in a world - the “true virtual reality” of the MMO Taia gets to play. Now I’m not a gamer, but I enjoyed sinking into a gamer world and seeing the world through gamer eyes. In many ways this book is a mystery. “Who drowned the Earth” is the question from the beginning and the answer turns out to be more important than anyone can bear. I finished this book with my heart in my mouth and read the last two chapters twice before I could put it down.
I loved this book. What I really love to read about in a book is interesting characters coming to care about each other, and this book delivered! I've read a lot of "the video game is real" media and i think this one compares favorably. I especially like comparing it to the manga, 1/2 prince because while both stories deal with the idea of what would we do if video game avatars really looked like us, this book takes a much more nuanced approach and really asks questions about self-perception. I liked the references to current gaming culture and even though i don't play video games I could follow everything that was happening.
one downside to the book was that a lot of the world building was exposition dumps in conversations that were a bit hard for me to follow. but I think it was sufficiently balanced in those conversations with a deepening of connection between the characters.
Overall i really enjoyed this book.
Some authors make you actually think while you read - you don’t merely ingest a plot and storyline (you DO do that, and what a storyline and plot it is!), you also have extended existential and philosophical ponderances while being enveloped in the book. Host manages this particularly well, with her wild plot lines explored by some inevitably reserved and highly rational character....which might sound boring (?). But think of it more like a slow burn romance for SF/F....the story is intriguing all along, but it takes a while to see all the pieces coalesce, but when it does, Host always, always delivers a dramatic finish. This book is no different - awesome premise (alien overlords, MMO games, time travel), a realistic and sympathetic lead character...what else could you ask for? Oh that’s right...the next book in the series ). My waiting starts now...
Loved it. Read it almost in one sitting, highly unusual for me this year.
Pace slow.
Intensity low, until the end.
Characters wonderful.
Worldbuilding fascinating.
Mystery mysterious! I didn't figure it out before the big reveal at the end.
Need to understand online gaming and/or the vast world of computer games You really don't. Occasional comments from other reviews notwithstanding, I have zero experience with or knowledge of any of that kind of stuff, but I had no trouble following everything.
Biggest problem with Book 1 of this series waiting for the sequel!
